COURSE OVERVIEW

The Advanced Workshop of Intrauterine Procedures provides a practical introduction to this advanced procedure. The workshop will give you a step by step guide to the procedure and valuable insight into the safety guidelines you need to know to avoid complications. You will learn what equipment is necessary to achieve the best outcomes for your patients, with the opportunity to practise on simulated models. This workshop will also demonstrate how to plan patient counselling with an analysis of patient case scenarios. It will enable you to seriously consider this advanced procedure for your practice. If you decide to undertake further clinical training for this highly sought-after service, referrals to clinical trainers are available

The Advanced Workshop can be completed individually or as stage 3 of the Advanced Certificate of Clinical Procedures.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND COURSE REQUISITES

This advanced workshop is designed to meet the needs of general practitioners who are interested in performing IUS insertions and removals in the primary care setting. The workshop is for general practitioners only and assumes previous experience in clinical procedures.  

This workshop can be completed individually or as stage 3 of the Advanced Certificate of Clinical Procedures.

COURSE CONTENTS

  • Determining the correct steps in the process of intrauterine procedures
  • Recognising the safety rules to avoid complications during intrauterine procedures
  • Determining the necessary equipment for intrauterine procedures
  • Planning patient counselling
  • Analysing patient case scenarios

This workshop can be completed individually or as stage 3 of the Advanced Certificate of Clinical Procedures.

10:30am – 12:00pm Session 2 Copper IUD and IUS practical session on simulated models and devices including bimanual techniques (Part 1)
12:00pm – 1:00pm Lunch  
1:00pm – 2:30pm Session 3 IUS practical session on simulated models and devices including bimanual techniques (Part 2) and case discussions
2:30pm - 3:00pm Afternoon Tea  
3:00pm – 4:00pm Session 4 Case discussions (Part 2) and counselling of patients requesting IUS

Dr Nelum Dharmapriya was born in Sri Lanka. She graduated from the University of Aberdeen, UK, in 1995 and was a partner at Heaton Norris Medical Centre in Stockport, UK, for seven years. Nelum arrived in Australia in 2009 and established Narangba Doctors in 2012. She is married with two teenage boys and loves to spend time outdoors – running, cycling, travelling and reading.

COURSE DELIVERY AND ASSESSMENT

This Advanced Procedures Workshop is designed as a face-to-face workshop supported by online materials. The one-day workshop is delivered on Sundays and includes presentations and demonstrations from an expert in the field followed by practical hands-on application using medical grade models. Online assessment in the form of multiple choice questions will take place after the workshop.

CERTIFICATION AND ACCREDITATION

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

RACGP: 40 Category 1 QI&CPD points
ACRRM: Application pending

This workshop:

  • Is recognised by Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP). The RNZCGP recognises all courses endorsed by the RACGP. Peer review and audit are compulsory.
  • Is recognised by the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians (HKCFP). The HKCFP recognises all courses endorsed by the RACGP. Points are calculated differently.

Optional clinical attachments are available for IUS procedures. These clinical attachments are an opportunity to see an expert performing IUS insertion or removal and other female reproductive procedures such as insertion or removal of contraceptive implants. General practitioners have the opportunity to observe the expert in action, ask questions and seek guidance.
