Dermoscopy empowers the clinician with improved diagnostic capability in the management of primary cutaneous malignancy. Histopathology usually defines the diagnosis, guides optimal therapeutic decisions and predicts prognosis. This course extends the knowledge and skill required to understand the application and conceptual links between dermoscopy and histopathology.

Upon successful completion of the Certificate in Primary Care Skin Cancer Medicine (which includes dermoscopy) clinicians are encouraged to enrol in the Certificate in Advanced Dermoscopy and Histopathology. However the Certificate in Advanced Dermoscopy and Histopathology is open to any medical practitioner who has experience in dermoscopy. Delivery of this course is focused on improving diagnostic skill and management by exploring the correlations linking histopathology with dermoscopy.

Program Objectives

The goal of this program is to provide advanced training in the application of dermoscopy to diagnosis and the management of skin cancer in the both primary care and specialist practice.

The Certificate course will provide the clinician with a range of skills at an advanced level in:

  • Dermatoscopes: non polarized verses polarized
  • Evidence based application of dermoscopy
  • Pigmented and non pigmented structures
  • Dermoscopic analysis of vascular patterns
  • Dermoscopy of melanocytic lesions
  • Use of dermoscopy in the management of Basal Cell Carcinoma
  • Keratinocytic lesions, diagnosis and management
  • Important dermoscopy features of clinically relevant miscellaneous entities
  • Dermoscopy feature variation in different anatomic sites


Certificate Course Format

The Certificate course is designed to meet the needs of busy medical practitioners by providing a flexible program with the majority of its requirements conducted in your own time.

The course includes:

  • An online pre-workshop activity (completed in your own time prior to the workshop component)
  • A two day weekend practical workshop
  • Reference materials including full colour folder of all PowerPoint slides presented
  • Online training and assessment (completed in your own time within 6 months of attending the workshop)

Online Pre-Workshop Activity

To prepare the participant the University of Queensland has a short series of 40 multiple choice questions completed online prior to the workshop segment.  A record of participation is kept for the various colleges as it forms part of the CPD / CME component.

Workshop Delivery

The two day workshop segment of the course is presented by renown Skin Cancer Dermoscopists and pathologists including Dr Ian Katz, Dr Cliff Rosendahl, Dr John Pyne, Dr Simon Clark and Dr Alan Cameron in an interactive and case based program which is unique in Australia. The course includes case discussions and the use of wireless audience responders.

Assessment Requirements  

This course features two online assessment requirements case studies and multiple choice questions. The assessment is to be completed at your convenience within three months of the completion of the workshop.

The open book exams are designed in such a way that they do not have to be completed in one sitting with the ability to log in and out as many times as you wish.

A Statutory Declaration must be completed and signed at the conclusion of the exam to verify that you have completed the exam without personal outside assistance.

The University of Queensland School of Medicine Award is posted on receipt of your statutory declaration.
