Total body skin examination for skin cancer screening in patients with focused symptoms
- The value of total body skin examination for skin cancer screening in patients with focused skin symptoms is controversial.
- We examined 14,381 patients by total body skin examination and calculated that 47 (95% confidence interval 28-80) patients need to be examined to detect one skin malignancy and 400 (95% confidence interval 182-910) patients to detect one melanoma.
- Factors significantly influencing the chance to find a skin cancer in the multivariate analysis were age, previous skin cancer, fair skin type, skin tumor as the reason for consultation, and presence of an equivocal lesion on problem/uncovered areas.
Pale People May Need Vitamin D Supplements
Cancer Research UK-funded researchers at the University of Leeds suggest that people with very pale skin may be unable to spend enough time in the sun to make the amount of vitamin D the body needs - while also avoiding sunburn.

International Dermoscopy Society (IDS)
The International Dermoscopy Society (IDS) is a free resource for the dermoscopy interested physicians across the world. Individuals may join by direct application for free membership at www.dermoscopy-ids.org. Our aim is to promote clinical research in dermoscopy and to represent a clinically oriented organization with a thrust towards helping and improving education in dermoscopy.
Along the lines of our open access philosophy, we developed a new educational section composed of short video tutorials. These dermoscopy podcasts have been set forth by recognized experts in the field who covered basic and advanced issues of dermoscopic evaluation of pigmented and non-pigmented skin tumors.
To improve content delivery our dermoscopy podcasts are available for download from the iTunes store and can thus be viewed using iPods, iPhones, and iPads. Alternatively, video streaming is also available through the IDS website. We hope you will enjoy watching our podcasts!
